What happens when a countersink has excessive runout? How to check and fix it?
Effects of excessive runout: 1) Poor surface quality - uneven cutting leaves tool marks, chatter and roughness; 2) Unstable size - chamfer size varies; 3) Faster tool wear - some flutes take excess load and wear quickly; 4) Edge chipping - impact from runout chips edges; 5) Machine damage - long-term runout damages spindle bearings. Checking: 1) Dial indicator - mount the tool, rest the indicator on the cylindrical shank, turn the spindle by hand and read the swing; generally runout should be under 0.02mm; 2) After machining - regular tool marks or chatter marks indicate runout. Fixes: 1) Re-clamp - remove the tool, clean oil and chips from collet and shank, re-clamp straight and tight; 2) Check collet - worn or deformed collets cause runout - replace; 3) Check spindle - if the spindle itself runs out, repair or adjust; 4) Shorten overhang - long overhang amplifies runout; 5) Check the tool - bent or out-of-round shanks should be replaced.
