Countersunk hole and pilot hole are off-center - what to do? How to ensure concentricity?
An off-center countersunk hole (eccentricity) tilts the screw head, prevents tightening and leaves an uneven surface. Causes and fixes: 1) Tool runout - runout in the countersink/spot facer shifts the hole; fix: re-clamp, check runout, shorten overhang; 2) No pilot - a standard countersink wanders without location; fix: use a piloted spot facer - the pilot inserts into the pilot hole and guarantees concentricity; 3) Center-drill first - a center mark gives the tool a locating point and reduces drift; 4) Workpiece not secure - movement causes eccentricity; fix: clamp firmly; 5) Spindle runout - the spindle itself runs out; fix: repair or adjust the machine; 6) Feed too fast - fast entry drifts off-center; fix: slow feed, light cut first, then increase; 7) Pilot hole itself is off - if the pilot hole is drilled off-center the countersink follows; fix: ensure accurate drilling. The most effective method is a piloted spot facer - the pilot matches the pilot hole, guaranteeing concentricity and consistent batch results. Without a piloted tool, center-drilling plus slow light entry also helps.
