Can countersinks machine titanium? What are the characteristics?
Yes, countersinks can machine titanium, but it is hard-to-machine - be careful. Titanium characteristics: 1) Poor thermal conductivity - only 1/4-1/5 of steel; heat concentrates at the edge, overheating and wearing tools fast; 2) High chemical activity - reacts, diffuses and welds to tool material at high temperature: welding and diffusion wear; 3) Low elastic modulus - large elastic deformation, deflection and spring-back, unstable sizes, chatter marks; 4) Work hardening - severe hardening layer accelerates wear. Which tool: 1) Cobalt HSS (HSS-E) - for general requirements, cheap, average life; 2) Carbide - for batch production: hard, wear-resistant, conducts heat, long life, but brittle; 3) Coating - AlCrN or TiAlN: heat-resistant, anti-welding, 50%-100% longer life; 4) Diamond coating (PCD/CVD) - for finishing: great finish, long life, expensive; NOT for steels (carbon diffusion). Parameters: 1) speed - low: cobalt HSS 200-500rpm, carbide 500-1000rpm; 2) feed - small, 0.03-0.08mm/rev; 3) fluid - flood, EP emulsion or titanium-specific fluid, 10%-15%; 4) sharp edges - very sharp; dull tools worsen hardening; re-sharpen promptly; 5) never dry-cut - life is extremely short without fluid. Techniques: 1) trial cut first; 2) frequent spot checks (sizes unstable); 3) replace tools promptly, not after chipping; 4) finish - hand-polish with sandpaper or polishing paste.
