How does workpiece material affect countersink tool life?

Workpiece material is one of the most critical factors affecting countersink tool life, through the following mechanisms: 1. Hardness mechanism The harder the workpiece, the greater the cutting resistance and the faster the edge wears. On regular steel (HB150-250), cobalt HSS countersinks machine 2000+ pieces; on stainless steel (HB200-300), life drops to around 1000 pieces; on hardened steel (HRC45+), carbide is required, with only 300-500 pieces. Every HB50 increase in hardness cuts tool life by roughly 30-40%. 2. Thermal conductivity mechanism The lower the workpiece thermal conductivity, the harder it is for cutting heat to escape through the workpiece - heat concentrates at the cutting edge, accelerating wear. Stainless steel conducts only 1/3 as well as carbon steel; edge temperature can reach 800 degrees C, twice that of regular steel, sharply shortening life. Aluminum conducts heat well, keeping temperatures low and life long. 3. Chemical affinity mechanism The stronger the chemical affinity between workpiece and tool material, the more adhesion and diffusion wear occur. Titanium and nickel-based superalloys have strong affinity with carbide, causing heavy adhesion and diffusion and extremely short life. Nickel and chromium in stainless steel also react with tool materials, accelerating wear. 4. Work hardening mechanism Austenitic stainless steel, high-manganese steel and similar materials work-harden severely during cutting - the machined surface becomes 50-100% harder than the base metal, so the next cut works on the hardened layer, accelerating edge wear. This is another reason stainless steel is hard to machine. 5. Toughness and chip-breaking mechanism Ductile materials (low-carbon steel, aluminum, copper) produce long chips that wrap around the tool, scratching the machined surface and causing chipping. Brittle materials (cast iron) produce powdery chips with less tool wear, but dust accelerates abrasive wear. Tool life by material (cobalt HSS countersinks): * Carbon steel: 2000-3000 pieces * Aluminum: 3000-5000 pieces * Copper: 2500-4000 pieces * Cast iron: 1500-2500 pieces * Stainless steel: 800-1500 pieces * Mold steel: 600-1200 pieces * Titanium/nickel alloys: 200-500 pieces (carbide required) Lihao Technology recommendation: Match tool material and coating to the workpiece. Regular steel: cobalt HSS + TiN; stainless steel: M42 cobalt HSS + AlCrN; aluminum/copper: polished HSS + DLC; hardened steel: solid carbide + TiAlN.
