Which countersinks for aerospace machining? What special requirements?
For aerospace we recommend cobalt HSS (HSS-E) or carbide countersinks: 1) Difficult materials - aerospace commonly uses titanium, superalloys (nickel- and cobalt-based), high-strength steel; these are hard, tough, work-harden severely, and wear standard HSS fast; 2) High demands - aerospace parts demand high precision and surface quality; no tool marks, burrs or cracks allowed; 3) Consistency - mass production needs stable tool life and batch-to-batch consistency. Special requirements: 1) Material - titanium: cobalt HSS or carbide; superalloys: carbide or coated cobalt HSS; 2) Coating - TiAlN or AlCrN recommended for heat and wear resistance at high speed; 3) Parameters - low speed (titanium 300-600rpm, superalloys 200-400rpm), small feed (0.03-0.08mm/rev), generous cutting fluid; 4) Sharp edges - dull tools cause work hardening and fast wear; re-sharpen promptly; 5) Quality stability - buy from reputable manufacturers with material certificates and test reports per batch. Aerospace has no tolerance for inferior tools - avoid batch scrap.
