How to store countersinks rust-free? Can rusted ones still be used?
Rust prevention: 1) Apply oil - wipe tools clean after use, coat lightly with rust-preventive oil or grease, then store in a tool box; 2) Dry storage - keep in a dry, ventilated place away from humidity (watch the plum-rain season in the south); 3) Separate storage - one tool per box or sleeve, not mixed with other tools to avoid impacts and coating scratches; 4) Do not touch edges - skin oils cause rust; handle tools by the shank; 5) Periodic checks - inspect long-stored tools and treat any rust promptly. Can rusted tools be used? Light surface rust - polish off with a fine oilstone or abrasive paper, apply oil, and continue use with little impact; heavy rust - edges corroded and damaged, cutting performance affected; regrind or replace rather than force use (risk of chipping and poor quality). Rust on coated tools usually means damaged coating; after polishing the coating is gone, so life on difficult materials shortens.
