How long do countersinks last? How to extend life?

There is no fixed life - it depends heavily on material, parameters and usage. References: carbon steel/aluminum - cobalt HSS tools machine 5000-20000 holes; stainless - 2000-8000 holes; hardened steel/superalloys - 500-2000 holes. To extend life: 1) Right material - cobalt HSS for stainless, carbide for hardened steel; 2) Coating - TiAlN resists heat and wear, adding 30-50% life; 3) Sensible parameters - low speed, generous feed; no overspeed or overload; 4) Cutting fluid - full cooling and lubrication reduce wear; 5) Timely regrinding - sharpen when dull, do not wait for chipping; 6) Firm clamping - less runout and vibration; 7) Avoid drops - edges are brittle and chip when they hit the floor.
