What coatings are available for countersinks? How to choose between TiN, TiCN, TiAlN, AlCrN and DLC?
Common coatings and selection: 1) TiN (titanium nitride) - gold; hardness ~HV2000, service temp 500C; for carbon steel, alloy steel, copper - cheap but limited heat and wear resistance; 2) TiCN (titanium carbonitride) - purple; ~HV2500, 400C; more wear-resistant than TiN; good lubrication; for carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless; less heat-resistant than TiAlN; 3) TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride) - violet-black; ~HV3000, 800C; heat-, wear- and oxidation-resistant; for stainless steel, mold steel, superalloys, hardened steel - the most common high-performance coating, great for high-speed dry cutting; 4) AlCrN (aluminum chromium nitride) - dark gray; ~HV3200, 1100C; more heat- and wear-resistant than TiAlN; for superalloys, titanium, hardened steel - heavy high-speed cutting; pricier than TiAlN; 5) DLC (diamond-like carbon) - black; ~HV5000, low friction, anti-welding; for aluminum, copper, plastic and non-ferrous; NOT for steels (carbon diffusion); 6) Uncoated - cheap; for aluminum, copper, plastic or low-demand jobs. Selection guide: 1) steel, alloy steel - TiN or TiCN; 2) stainless, mold steel - TiAlN; 3) superalloys, titanium, hardened steel - AlCrN; 4) aluminum, copper, plastic - DLC or uncoated; 5) unsure - TiAlN, most versatile. Coatings extend tool life 30%-100% - hard-to-machine materials should always be coated.
