How do the shank diameter and collet work together? What to note?

Shank and collet matching: 1) Common shank sizes - 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20mm; confirm your collet size when ordering; 2) Collet type - use ER collets (precision, low runout), not drill chucks (high runout, poor accuracy); 3) Fit - clearance typically 0.005-0.01mm; too loose causes runout, too tight makes mounting hard; 4) Insertion depth - insert at least 2x the shank diameter to prevent the tool from pulling out; 5) Tightening - tighten the nut firmly, but do not force with a cheater bar (deforms the collet); 6) Cleanliness - clean oil and chips from collet and shank before mounting; foreign matter causes runout; 7) Check runout - dial indicator after mounting, under 0.02mm; re-mount if high; 8) Overhang - keep overhang short, generally under 3x shank diameter; long overhang is weak and vibrates; 9) Collet wear - ER collets wear with use; replace when accuracy drops (roughly after 1000+ clampings or visible wear); 10) Different sizes - use a reduction sleeve if shank and collet differ, but sleeves add runout - prefer matching shank collets. Key: clean + deep insertion + tighten + check runout - this keeps precision and tool life.
