Can countersinks be used on CNC lathes? How?
Yes, countersinks can be used on CNC lathes - very convenient for chamfering hole mouths on shaft and disc parts. How to use: 1) Mounting - mount the countersink on the lathe tool post with an ER collet or dedicated holder; secure and low runout; 2) Tool setting - set X and Z; X to the hole diameter, Z to the hole-mouth face; 3) Programming - use G01 linear interpolation from outside the hole mouth inward; calculate feed by angle: 90-degree countersink - X and Z feed equally; 60-degree - Z feed = X feed x 1.732; 4) Parameters - lathe speeds are generally higher than drill presses: carbon steel 1000-2000rpm, stainless 500-1000rpm, feed 0.05-0.15mm/rev; 5) Notes - keep overhang short to avoid vibration and collision; lock the tool post; generous cutting fluid. Lathe chamfering advantages: 1) One setup - done together with turning, no second clamping, efficient; 2) High precision - CNC lathes have accurate positioning and consistent chamfer size; 3) Ideal for shaft parts - hole-mouth chamfers on shafts and discs are easiest on a lathe. Notes: 1) do not use drill-ground countersinks - wrong angle and dull edges; 2) no overspeed - lathes spin fast but large countersink diameters keep line speed in check; 3) watch for collisions - with long overhang, avoid hitting the chuck, tailstock or workpiece during rapid moves; 4) internal chamfers - use extended-shank internal chamfer tools and mind tool-bar rigidity to prevent vibration.
