What are common countersink usage mistakes? How to avoid them?
Common mistakes and fixes: 1) Speed too high - many think faster is more efficient, but excessive speed overheats tools, accelerates wear, causes welding and chipping, especially on stainless and other hard materials. Fix: use recommended speeds; low for hard materials; 2) Feed too low - chips are too thin; the tool rubs instead of cutting, wearing fast with poor finish. Fix: reasonable feed, generally 0.05-0.2mm/rev; 3) No cutting fluid - dry cutting is convenient but shortens life and hurts finish, especially on hard materials. Fix: generous cutting fluid; 4) Overhang too long - weak, vibrating, runout, chipping. Fix: keep overhang under 3x shank diameter; 5) Poor clamping - loose tools fly out dangerously; loose workpieces make sizes unstable. Fix: check after clamping, tighten nuts; 6) Wrong tool - standard HSS on stainless, uncoated on hard materials, wrong angle. Fix: match tool to material and requirements; 7) No timely sharpening - dull tools cut with high force, poor finish, even chipping. Fix: sharpen or replace promptly; 8) No runout check - runout causes tool marks and fast wear. Fix: check after clamping; re-mount if high; 9) No first-piece trial - straight to batch, wrong parameters scrap the batch. Fix: trial-cut first; 10) No safety glasses - flying chips injure eyes.
