How to control depth when countersinking? What methods?

Depth control methods: 1) Machine control - CNC machining centers and lathes control Z depth by programming: accurate, consistent, most common; 2) Limit control - drill presses and mills use depth stops or depth gauges: set, lock, batch-consistent; 3) Piloted control - a piloted spot facer: the pilot enters the pilot hole and bottoms out, defining depth without relying on the machine - best consistency for ordinary machines and batches; 4) Trial-cut adjustment - first-piece trial, measure chamfer size, adjust depth, then run the batch; 5) Scale control - machines with depth scales (e.g. drill press depth dial) adjust directly by scale; 6) Measuring - calipers or depth gauges during machining for fine adjustment. Depth calculation: 1) 90-degree countersink - chamfer width (C value) = depth of cut; e.g. C1 chamfer = 1mm depth; 2) 60-degree - depth = chamfer width x 1.732; 3) 120-degree - depth = chamfer width x 0.577; 4) Countersunk holes - depth set by screw head height; the head normally sits 0.1-0.3mm below the surface. Control tips: 1) first-piece inspection before the batch; 2) spot-check every 10-20 parts; 3) wear compensation - chamfers shrink as the tool wears; adjust depth accordingly; 4) piloted tools - best depth consistency, independent of operator skill; 5) macros for CNC - control depth and auto-compensate wear. Depth control is the key to chamfering - it directly affects product quality and assembly.
