Can countersinks machine external chamfers? Which tool for external chamfers?
Yes, countersinks can machine external chamfers, but turning tools or dedicated chamfer tools are more common. External chamfer methods: 1) Lathe turning - for shaft and disc parts, a 45-degree turning tool or chamfer tool does external chamfers in one setup: accurate and efficient; 2) Countersink - conical countersinks on external edges suit parts that cannot go on a lathe or rework of finished parts; 3) Chamfering machines - electric or pneumatic machines for sheet and profile edges; 4) Manual - files or sandpaper for small quantities, odd shapes, field repairs. Using countersinks externally: 1) Tool choice - countersinks or end mills; 90 degrees is most common; 2) Clamping - clamp the workpiece firmly; radial cutting force can rotate it; 3) Parameters - slightly lower speed and feed than hole-mouth chamfering to prevent loosening; 4) Tool setting - set X to the external diameter, Z to the face; 5) Measuring - chamfer gauges or calipers. External vs hole-mouth chamfering: 1) Hole mouth - stable cutting inside the hole, chip removal slightly worse; 2) External - cutting outside the workpiece, radial force may loosen the part, chip removal good; 3) Lathe external - turning tool is easiest, no countersink needed; 4) Mill/machining center external - countersink with circular interpolation or a dedicated external chamfer tool. Recommendation: shaft parts - lathe turning tool; sheet/profile edges - chamfering machine; reworking finished parts - countersink by hand or on a mill.
